Derek Grant, newsman dies. 1945 - 2020

OBITUARY

Derek Neil Grant 1945 - 2020.

Derek Grant,  a Veteran of Fleet Street, died on Friday March 13th 2020 (!!) A former UPI Foreign Correspondent, UPI London Correspondent and Bureau Chief, then Launch Editor of IRN/LBC commercial talk radio in the UK, lived in Norfolk, then latterly retired to Spain with his wife Pat Grant.

Derek Grant died earlier today, Friday 13th March 2020  at 2:30 pm (CET) at the Huercal Overa Hospital, Andalucia, Spain. He died peacefully in his sleep.

His leaves a widow Pat Grant, married for over 33 years, and a son and daughter by a previous marriage in the UK.

Funeral arrangement have yet to be finalised, as also on this day Friday 13th March 2020; Spain declared a State of Emergency to fight the Coronavirus Pandemic. Both items top of the current news agenda, which as a veteran Fleet Street newsman, Derek would have found highly appropriate.

Paris Event Cancelled. Passenger Terminal EXPO Original March dates cancelled - the dates are now June 9/10/11 Paris

Message from Passenger Terminal EXPO & CONFERENCE

With the current global health concerns and the uncertainty that these bring to international travel and large gatherings including major aviation related exhibitions and conferences, we have taken the decision to postpone Passenger Terminal EXPO & CONFERENCE.

The new dates are June 9/10/11, 2020, Porte de Versailles, Paris. The event will be held in exactly the same venue as originally planned, at the centrally located Porte de Versailles exhibition center, using a superb quality, brand-new part of the venue with purpose-built conference facilities adjoining the exhibition hall.

The layout enables easy movement between conference rooms, so delegates can quickly switch streams and at the same time enjoy all the advantages of the incredible exhibition with over 300 exhibitors. Entry to the exhibition will, as always, be FREE OF CHARGE and all the latest technologies, concepts and services will be on show.

The date revision will give us new opportunities for participants to enjoy the summer weather in Paris, which will be far better than the normal dull skies and fairly cold weather in late March.

Conference program – note only minor changes are envisaged, not least to bring the content absolutely up to date to include the impact of COVID-19 on the airline and airport industry

We have considerable experience in running events globally and we have already run one major expo and conference in Hannover in the week commencing February 24, during the current health problems.

We added numerous extra well-being measures that included airport industry temperature scanners before the entrance to the venue. In combination with significantly enhanced sanitization of all areas, the inclusion of totally wi-fi-based and therefore 'no contact' registration at the entrance area, and numerous contact-free hand-sanitizing units, this created a relaxed and comfortable business environment for all.

Although we do not envisage such measures being necessary in June, we will be monitoring the situation closely and may incorporate similar ones even though by then they could be deemed unnecessary.

Explorer of the Seas will head for 10 metre revolving storm conditions.

Julian Bray writes: The Royal  Caribbean Cruise Ship Explorer of the Seas had it not craftily diverted to Malaga and Lisbon for two overnight stays and extended its current cruise by three days would tonight  be facing over 10 metre waves and gale force winds from four savage conveyor belt overlapping storms. The latest live update  from RCI  in Miami suggests guests will still encounter a bumpy ride but waves will be around 4. 5 metres in the middle of the Bay Of Biscay. Many guests have taken advantage of the cruise lines offer to refund any lost flights and to cover the cost of connecting flights between Lisbon and connecting airports. They have also lobbed in 12 items of laundry free per person for those running out essentials! Tonight's on board entertainment features veteran comedy turn David Copperfield in what promises to be a sell out new show filling the ships 1,200 seat main theatre...

Explorer of the Seas cruise ship unexpectedly extends cruise by three days to beat conveyor belt of storms due to hit northern Spain, Bay of Biscay and English Channel. UK weather forecasts not reporting storm threat claim cruise holidaymakers..

The Royal Caribbean Explorer of the Seas has unexpectedly extended the current 10 day cruise to the Canaries by three days to take in storm protective overnight stops in both Malaga and Lisbon as to continue with its present route to Vigo and La Coruna in Northern Spain would have pitched the cruise ship directly into the path of four storms in a conveyor belt like formation.

Jim Van Fleet the Miami based Royal Caribbean weatherman has dominated the ship television channels with lurid images of major storms and waves of over 10 metres coupled with high gale force winds. They have been tracking its progress for several days.

The cruise line has opted give an extra three days cruise vacation to the thousands of Brits. enjoying life on board and has also agreed to refund any lost airfare deposits or extra car park costs. Free ship to shore telephone calls are being offered to worried guests and cut price internet deals.

Guests on board have seriously questioned why UK TV weather forecasters are not fully reporting these storms due to impact in the next few days.

UK airlines invest in cleaner aircraft and carbon reduction -
call for a renewed partnership with Government to fund new clean aviation technology and sustainable fuels

 

As part of the Airlines2050 conference taking place in London today, UK airlines have renewed their calls for a renewed partnership with Government to support the aviation industry in its efforts to decarbonise by investing in the green aviation technologies of the future.    

 

Aviation is a major UK success story and connects Britain to the world, keeping families together, helping businesses thrive and increase trade. UK airlines are showing that they can deliver all these benefits sustainably.

 

Parliament has legislated to cut greenhouse gas emissions for the UK economy to net zero by 2050 and Airlines UK – the industry body – believes that through an international approach, with the right Government support, and together with substantial investment from industry, this is within reach for UK aviation by 2050.

 

Airlines are already implementing carbon reduction measures, with new initiatives and investments designed to speed up progress, but support from Government will be crucial:

 

  • Cleaner, quieter aircraft - Airlines UK members have spent billions on new aircraft, that are up to 25% more carbon efficient than those they replace.
  • Sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) –SAFs can cut carbon emissions by at least 30% by 2050, and generate thousands of new jobs in UK fuel plants. British Airways is investing $400m in such a sustainable jet fuel plant in Humberside. Airlines are calling on UK Government to provide financial support to extend, upscale, reduce costs of development and commercialise SAF.
  • Carbon Offsetting Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) – From next year CORSIA, the first worldwide agreement signed by the United Nations in 2016, will make growth in international flights carbon neutral by paying to mitigate around 2.5 billion tonnes of CO2 and generate over $40 billion for climate projects between 2021 and 2035. The UN aims to set an even more ambitious goal beyond 2035. UK Government should continue its excellent leadership role in these discussions at the UN.
  • Airspace modernisation – Bringing UK airspace into the 21st century with satellite-based navigation and direct routes can cut carbon emissions by 9 to 14%. Government should work with industry and the Civil Aviation Authority to ensure plans are delivered on time.
  • Investment in R&D – Investment in new aircraft and engine technology will be critical for delivering future hybrid-electric short-haul aircraft from 2035, and to the deployment of fully electric aircraft in the longer-term. Government should support further R&D.   

 

Tim Alderslade, Chief Executive of Airlines UK, said: "Airlines are doing everything they can to demonstrate their commitment to decarbonisation - and are making real progress, investing in hundreds of new aircraft which are up to 25% more efficient than those they replace.

 

"Through a renewed partnership between Government and industry, the UK is uniquely placed to capitalise on the opportunities of green aviation technology, whether that's more efficient engines or hybrid electric aircraft. However, these remain some years off which is why support for sustainable aviation fuels and airspace modernisation in the here and now remains so vital. 

 

"Aviation is of course an international sector and in addition to our own efforts, Governments across the globe must continue to support the UN offsetting scheme that will capture any growth in aviation from next year, and continue to work on developing a long-term target through to 2050 that crucially is consistent with limiting global temperatures to 1.5 degrees."

 

Grant Shapps MP, Secretary of State for Transport, said: "The fight against climate change is the greatest and most pressing challenge facing the modern world and aviation has a crucial role to play in tackling it. This commitment by the aviation industry is very welcome and absolutely vital if we are to reduce carbon emissions.

 

"The government has recently invested £2bn in aerospace research and development and sustainable fuels, and is continuing to look for opportunities to support the creation of greener, cleaner transport."

•             Aviation fuel is now eligible for support under the Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation, and the Government is providing £22m to support the development of advanced low carbon fuels through the Future Fuels for Flight and Freight competition, which also requires matched funding from the private sector.

•             The Government has also committed to setting a clear ambition for the aviation sector and we will publish our position on aviation and climate change for consultation shortly.
