Julian Bray writes: By all accounts UK PLC is in big trouble, but we've been here before, you say but not this bad for over 100 years ie the time when the Titanic sank.! But trouble? No more so than in the regions (and I must declare that I am running for local council in the City of Peterborough on May 3rd and standing as an independent in the Stanground Central ward) but what worries me is not that the Coalition has got it so mind bendingly wrong, but the rest of us don't really care otherwise we'd have more than a 28 per cent turn out and local councillors would not be elected with just a vote of a few hundred.
In fact round this way whole families make a thing of it and it's not unusual to see a Mr and Mrs sitting as a cloned pair of councillors in the chamber together each drawing full allowances. There is not quick fisz to the problem and if one or other of the controlling parties decided to impose block party line voting then the democratic process takes another hammering. Despite all the debate and all the back up documentation, the party line prevails.
I simply say this as if everyone made a spcial effort and voted on May 3rd the current political landscape would be very different. If you have taken thids to heart, you'll see the difference on May 4th ( and I will have been elected with a breathaking landside majority, we might even see a few pigs flying past the election window as well) but sadly we can still expect a great deal of apathy and many saying I didn' bother to vote, as I see no purpose. Or put another way it's the shopkeeper saying "we are out of stock as there is no demand for it..." Prove me wrong People, just use your vote on May 3rd......you don't even have to vote for me but just vote...... Julian Brays election blog is on www.stanground.blogspot.com
