Jon Leyne BBC foreign news correspondent has died of a brain tumour at the age of 55, the corporation has reported.
He was diagnosed with an incurable brain tumor earlier this year after returning to the UK from Cairo, initially for treatment to cobat recurring severe headaches.
The veteran highly respected journalist had covered wars and unrest in many regions over the past three decades, including in recent years, the Libyan uprising and Egyptian revolution.
A BBC executive commented said: "Jon was a brave and courageous journalist in the best traditions of the BBC. He had an insatiable curiosity and told complex stories in an engaging and accessible way."
