A Virgin Atlantic Boeing 747-400 - (international variant with winglets) registration G-VXLG on Flight VS-75 from Manchester, to Orlando, Forida,USA with 433 people on board, was climbing out of Manchester, when the crew reporting an engine problem, stopped the climb at flight level 080 and entered a hold pattern.
The aircraft then climbed to FL180, dumped fuel, and diverted to London's Gatwick Airport for a safe landing on runway 26L about 90 minutes after departure. A replacement Boeing 747-400 registration G-VROS reached Orlando with a delay of 6 hours.
A passenger reported the captain announced they were having problems with an engine (CF6), and needed to dump fuel, subsequently the crew announced they were diverting to Gatwick.
The airline reported the aircraft diverted to Gatwick due to a minor technical problem.
