Julian Bray comments: Why is David Cameron frightened of introducing anti dumping duties to protect British produced steel and steel products? Simply the Chinese ( currently Chinese President Xi Jinping and Mrs.. using Buckingham palace as bed and breakfast - but handy for Chinatown ) are investing almost by stealth in many UK heavy and light industries. Service industries don't escape EVEN Pizza Express is now in the Chinese investment portfolio!
The Chinese own 10 per cent of London Heathrow Airport, and a tankful of Thames Water and a host of other once proud British companies. Having run out of money at home, the only way is to attract foreign investment, if its ever so slightly tainted then a Nelsonian Eye comes in handy.
All well and good whilst China was booming but its all different now. FACT: Chinese Steel is being relentlessly dumped on the UK market. Once our home steel market is fully wrecked, there will be no need to impose anti dumping duties, as we will no longer have any production to protect. It'll save endless arguments with Europe too.
The quicker Cameron can close the book on this, the better the chances Conservatives have of being re-elected at the next General Election.
The voting public have short memories and in any case the real pain is in Labour and SNP political territory. It also helps upset the organisation and membership of political opponents as in addition to the headline job numbers lost, no account is taken of the many small specialist engineering firms who service the large plants.
So in job loss terms you can double the effective job loss numbers, and those stats. still do not include a legion of self employed drivers who pay to lease their vans, and buy their uniforms ....
The collapse of the Steel Industry gets Cameron out of a hole and paves the way for the eventual Osborne Coronation. Osborne of course has been brown nosing the Chinese for some time now. Paving the way for an influx of Chinese investment, even though we have a strong pound.
However he might have overlooked, there is nothing to stop the Government imposing requirements on Government contracts to use British produced steel, HS2 being a prime example, the same goes for local government.
Central government funding only released when a percentage of home produced product forms part of any publicly funded project. Football stadiums with Chinese produced steel components for example.
As for human rights being discussed by Cameron and the Chinese Premier, it pre-supposes our Prime Minister has been properly briefed in the first place. He didn't seem to know about the Foreign Office Ministry of Justice deal to prop up the Saudi prison services, where no doubt fine steel products are used to publicly behead its citizens, and put to the lash ex-pat British pensioners for brewing up the 'Boots' style Home Brew wine kits.
Human rights will be discussed says our Prime Minister, that will be between the sorbet and the pudding course. We listened in: Cameron: "I said we would discuss human rights: Its a jolly good idea - there I've said it. Be a good chap and pass the Port, to the left I believe"
