Breakdown in Industrial Relations – ISS (Virgin Trains Kings Cross)
RMT UNION Circular No IR/273/15 Our Ref: BR1/14/2
11th November 2015
It's a case of here we go again, as the ISS company who hold the contract to clean Virgin Trains have changed 'working practices' and are restructuring the cleaning teams, basically more work, less employees. Below is the official memo from RMT currently doing the rounds ...
To All Branches, Regional Offices & Regional Councils
Dear Colleagues
Breakdown in Industrial Relations – ISS (Virgin Trains Kings Cross)
I write to advise branches that I have received several reports from our representatives highlighting a number of concerns relating to restructuring and changes to working practices these include:-
• Introduction of battery back vacuum cleaners
• Reduction in the size of cleaning teams
• Use of temporary agency workers to implement new ways of working
• New ways of working for tankers; including the cut from two (previously three) to just one tanker per train
• Job Cuts on the agenda, as a consequence for both cleaners and tankers (members have already been told there would be redundancies)
Additionally members are also experiencing problems with pay and are often waiting a long time for management to rectify these.
The General Grades Committee has now considered this matter believes that the company’s actions are completely unacceptable, and has instructed me to ballot our ISS Virgin Train members at Kings Cross for strike action and industrial action short of a strike.
I have advised the company that a dispute situation now exists and I am currently preparing the ballot matrix. I will of course keep branches updated on further developments.
Yours sincerely
Mick Cash
