Egypt Police Colonel Ali Ahmed Fahmy and conscripted officer Ramadan al-Burhami were both gunned down as they signed on to work in Giza's Shabramant district, the Ministry of Interior said in a statement released earlier today (Saturday).
Officials claimed police shot the two attackers, killing one and wounding another. According to Reuters: The attack was claimed by the Islamic State of Iraq (ISIL) group in a statement posted on messaging service, Telegram.
Saturday's attack comes just 48 hours after a man claiming to represent ISIL (according to social media reports) opened fire on a bus carrying Arab citizens of Israeli origin outside a Cairo hotel. Reports say no one was hurt in the attack.
Egyptian security forces have been the target of attacks by armed groups since the January 2011 part of the 'arab spring' uprising that ousted former president Hosni Mubarak. Attacks have increased significantly since the removal of Egypt's first freely-elected president, Mohamed Morsi, by the Egyptian army in July 2013. ISIL-affiliate Sinai Province, one of the armed groups operate predominantly in the Sinai Peninsula, have carried out attacks on the Egyptian mainland.
In November 2015 , masked ISIL gunmen shot and killed four police officers in Giza (Egypts' third largest City). ISIL a month earlier, in October claimed responsibility for bringing down a Russian Metrojet airliner. It crashed shortly after take-off from Sharm el-Sheikh airport.
Julian Bray Aviation Expert comments: "Russian and Western experts, myself included, concluded the plane was brought down by explosives placed on board, possibly by an airport worker, but Egyptian authorities continue to reject the claims. UK airlines are still boycotting Sharm-el-sheikh airport, and the holiday industry in the resort, and throughout Egypt has all but collapsed with widespread layoffs and hotels empty. The seaborne attack at a hotel used by foreign tourists in the resort of Hurghada at the Bella Vista hotel despite the hotel entrance being guarded by a European security firm ( believed to be part of the Control Risks organisation) clearly the beaches also need to be patrolled, and the unguarded restaurant next door. This isn't the first time an attack from the sea has had devastating consequences for Holidaymakers. Airlines say they may review matters if UK Government travel advice changes, but Sharm-el-Sheikh is surrounded by several conflict zones and arms are freely available to many dissident warring factions." It's unlikely to happen for some time, possibly years....
