In the wake of the Shoreham Air Show incident, a move that will seriously test the capabilities of all Air Show Flying Display Directors (FDD's) (and possibly cause some shows to fold), the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) announces that it is committed to accrediting Flying Display Directors (FDDs) to meet a new defined level of competence.
This follows the CAA’s review of air display regulation, in conjunction with CAP 1371. The new regulations apply to all flying display directors employed/hired for any events after May 2017.
The CAA says it has been working with the Military Aviation Authority (MAA) to define a competence framework for FDDs and to develop a means of accreditation against this framework. This will enable applicants to be accredited to be FDD's at both CAA and MAA events.
All FDD’s for displays occurring after May 2017, (except those that consist of a single item display where the FDD is the airborne display participant), will be required to gain this accredited competence, in order for permission to be granted by the CAA, or for military assets to be allocated to them.
Applications for FDD accreditation will be invited in January 2017 and will be based on the applicant’s submission of relevant knowledge, skills and experience.
All applicants will be required to attend a 2 day training course in order to attain their accreditation. The first course takes place at Shrivenham on 21st to 22nd March 2017, immediately prior to the Pre-season Display Symposium on 23rd March.
We expect to run a second course during May 2017. ONLY Successful applicants will be allocated to one of three tiers of competence, which will determine the level of complexity of display they will be permitted to direct during 2017.
Further details about FDD training and accreditation can be obtained from David Oastler at CAA 01293 573623 ( firstname.lastname@example.org ) or from the MAA at DSA-MAA-Courses@mod.uk
