A Ryanair flight from Lithuania to Luton was earlier today diverted to the 'secure emergency' Stansted Airport over a 'suspected hoax' threat received in Lithuania.
The flight - from Lithuania (Kaunas) - landed safely at Stansted and met by armed police, after being escorted by two rapid response RAF Typhoon jets from RAF Conningsby, Lincolnshire, a Main Operating Base, and home to two 'permanently combat-ready' RAF Squadrons.
The RAF were given special permission to fly at supersonic speed over England. The MOD will probably now face claims for broken glass in greenhouses!
Passengers were transferred to coaches at Stansted for the onward journey to Luton.
The Ryanair aircraft will remain on the ground for a detailed security search and engineering check before being cleared for a return to operational use, and possibly used by the CAA as one of the Monarch repatriation chartered-in fleet.
" This flight from Kaunas to London Luton (4 October) diverted to London Stansted in line with procedures after Lithuanian authorities received a suspected hoax security alert. The aircraft landed normally at Stansted and customers will be transferred to Luton by coach when cleared to do so.”
