Emirates airline, it can now be confirmed has placed a firm order for twenty A380s, the world's largest passenger airliner, with options to buy a further 16. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in 2020.
Julian Bray the aviation expert, speaking on BBC Scotland comments: "This latest development will certainly save the A380 production line from being prematurely mothballed and possibly broken down. The 'last minute' nature of the firm order for twenty A380s and options on a further sixteen, brings to an end an extraordinary nail-biting period of ordering brinkmanship."
It was only last week Airbus announced they would wind down production and possibly cease it all together, as airlines are increasingly favouring narrow body aircraft. However Emirates is already the largest customer for the plane, with 101 currently in service ,and an order book of 41 firm orders previously placed.
Emirates is the sole airline to have put the A380 at the heart of its operations and had been expected to place a major order at the at the Dubai Airshow last November. But bottles of champagne and cases of rosewater remained out of view as Emirates surprisingly ordered 40 Boeing 787 Dreamliners, much to the chagrin of the Airbus Dubai Airshow stand staff.
Airbus says this order underscores its commitment to produce the A380 for at least another 10 years. Hopes will be pinned on the rapidly expanding middle and far east markets, where the A380, it is said, will come into its own as the battle for airport slots will favour larger passenger numbers in fewer landings and takeoffs.
